This is a long overdue update of my current service. I was interested in finishing up my remaining hours of service doing environmental work, so I emailed a few local service partners. An employee of the Celery Bog Nature Reserve, which is just north of campus, emailed me back and explained that they needed mulch put down on their trails. I have a friend outside of this English class who also needs to do community service, and we decided to do the mulch laying. I set up a meeting with Dan so he could show us what exactly we were supposed to do. Once we got to the nature reserve, we immediately saw a huge pile of mulch in the parking lot. Dan showed us where the wheelbarrow and pitchfork and hoe were. Those were the tools that we’d be using to lay down the mulch. He then took us along one of the trails and showed us where we were to lay it. The nature reserve is actually a very cool place; I’d definitely recommend going to check it out. It’s very peaceful. Along one of the trails there is a dock that looks out on the lake and has a few benches. There is also a panoramic camera in that area that can be remotely accessed and controlled to view the lake. If you aren’t familiar with the area, it’s definitely worth paying a visit. After he showed us what needed to be done, he just told us we could spread it any time we wanted, which was really nice. My friend and I have gone out a few times, usually in the evening when it’s cooler, and worked for 1-2 hours. I like the flexibility a lot; it makes it much easier to do the service when we are free to decide when it gets done.

  1. I've never been to the Celery Bog Reserve, but I've heard a lot of people talk about it so I am not surprised that you also are giving it a positive review. I do like that the director of the volunteering service allowed you and your friend come in whenever was convenient for you to lay down the mulch. The flexibility must be especially nice since it is towards the end of the semester and final projects and exams will be happening at a less regular schedule than the rest of the year. If I hadn't already made a full commitment at Wolf Park, then I would definitely take a trip to the Celery Bog and see why everyone loves it. I do like the idea of a panoramic camera set up to see the scenery. I don't think I've heard of that in very many other places so that would be another good reason to stop by.

  2. I can certainly relate to not having updated my blog in a while. It has been about two weeks for me. I don’t think I will be able to get my ten in before the end of the semester because I’m one behind. In any event that sounds like an interesting project for you guys to work on. It certainly gives you a sense of accomplishment when you finish a project like that because you have physical proof of it being there and plus it’s just plain tiring. I did a lot of work like that when I was a scout either when helping people out with their eagle projects, or during my ordeal, or just to help someone, who asked our troop for assistance, out. It always makes it better to have a friend there otherwise it’s just miserable work. I hope the weather was good too because that can make all the difference.

  3. I can relate completely with the not updating the blog. Today I added almost all of my posts. I hope that I do not get in trouble for that.
I think you are lucky to be able to get that sense of pride from seeing physical proof from doing your volunteering. I can never getting anything close to that while working at my location.
Also the flexibility of your hours makes your locations sound so much better than mine.

  4. That's cool that you have the flexibility to work the hours that you want to when you want to work them. That definitely sounds very peaceful I will have to check that out when I need a break from studying this week.
